Work-Ship: Work & Rest Hours Software for Ships
A work and rest hours management system approved by ClassNK, IRClass and RightShip. Work-Ship helps crews plan and record hours of rest under STCW and MLC 2006, alerts ship and shore to non-compliances as they happen, and drastically reduces non-conformities without manipulation of data.

Hours of rest are now checked for credibility, not just completeness
The STCW and MLC limits on rest have not changed much, but the way they are inspected has. Inspectors now compare rest records with what actually happened onboard, and records that look too perfect attract as much attention as records that show breaches.
Seafarers must have at least 10 hours of rest in any 24-hour period and 77 hours in any 7-day period, with rest split into no more than two periods, one of at least 6 hours. Records must be kept onboard and signed by the seafarer.
Inspectors look at hours of rest alongside crew interviews, drills, cargo operations and port calls, and observations can be raised against the human element as well as the records themselves.
RightShip inspections review crew rest and fatigue management on dry bulk vessels, and findings feed the vessel's overall safety picture.
Port State Control regimes have run campaigns on STCW hours of rest, and a pattern of breaches or doubtful records can lead to deficiencies or detention. Tankers trading to the US must also respect OPA-90 work-hour limits.
IMO's guidelines on fatigue push companies to manage fatigue as a risk, which means using rest data to plan work, not just to file it.
Both frameworks expect the company to monitor rest hour compliance across the fleet, investigate non-conformities and show that its manning and work planning prevent fatigue.
What hours of rest are costing ship managers today
Rest hours sit where safety, crew welfare and inspection findings meet, and the paperwork burden falls on the busiest people onboard.
Records adjusted to look compliant
When the system makes honest entries painful, rest hours get rounded or rewritten. Inspectors are trained to spot it, and a manipulated record is a more serious finding than a genuine breach.
Non-conformities found too late
Breaches are often discovered at month-end or during an inspection, long after anyone could change the work plan to prevent them.
Clock changes that break the maths
Retarding or advancing clocks and crossing the International Date Line distort 24-hour and 7-day calculations, so correct entries can show false breaches or hide real ones.
Repeat findings across the fleet
The same ranks, the same operations and the same vessels keep producing deviations, but nobody ashore can see the pattern.
Overtime disputes
Hours of work and overtime are recorded separately from rest, so payroll queries and crew complaints take time to resolve.
Shore staff chasing paper
Superintendents and crewing teams spend time collecting monthly sheets instead of acting on what they show.
Monthly sheets, spreadsheets and after-the-fact checks — or a live, honest record that ship and shore both act on
Hours of rest should be planned in advance, recorded as they happen and checked automatically against every rule that applies.
What sets Work-Ship apart for your fleet
Work-Ship is a world-class system, first of its kind approved by two Classes and RightShip. It is built to reduce non-conformities by improving planning, not by tidying the records.
Approved by ClassNK, IRClass and RightShip
Independent approvals give inspectors and auditors confidence in how the system calculates and records hours of rest.
Interlocked acknowledgement
Non-conformities are acknowledged by ship and shore in real time, so the office knows about a breach while it can still act.
Handles the hard cases
International Date Line crossings, clocks retarded or advanced, OPA-90 limits and flexible overtime rules are built in, not worked around.
Your formats, your crew
Company-specific report formats ashore and simple planners onboard mean crews record accurately and the office gets reports it can use.
- Key features
- ClassNK, IRClass and RightShip approved
- Intuitive alerts onboard and ashore for heightened non-compliances
- Interlocked NC acknowledgement by ship and shore in real time
- Easy planners and record-keeping for ship's crew
- Automated ship-shore sync
- Comprehensive reporting ashore with advanced trending and analytics
- International Date Line, clocks retard/advance and OPA-90 application
- Flexible overtime application
- Company-specific report formats
- Easy-to-use user interface and user experience
- Drastically reduces non-conformities without manipulation of data
Fewer non-conformities, fewer findings, less admin
The safety return from Work-Ship comes from catching fatigue risk before it becomes a breach. The financial return comes from fewer findings and fewer hours spent ashore collecting and checking records.
Breaches prevented, not just recorded
Planners and early alerts let the Master and Head of Department rearrange work before a seafarer goes below the minimum rest, which is where the fatigue risk is reduced.
Fewer inspection findings
Honest, consistent records that handle clock changes correctly avoid both genuine breaches and the credibility questions that follow over-tidy logs.
Hours saved ashore
Automated ship-shore sync and ready-made trending replace the monthly collection and checking of sheets, freeing superintendents and crewing teams for follow-up.
Trending that shows where fatigue really comes from
Work-Ship turns daily entries into fleet-level patterns, and keeps the onboard screens simple enough to use at the end of a long watch.
Deviation trending
Deviations are trended month by month across the fleet, so you can see whether changes in manning or work planning are working.
Rank and vessel patterns
Breakdowns by rank and by vessel show which roles and ships carry the most fatigue risk.
Deviation risk analysis
Deviations are grouped by the rule they break, such as the 10-hour, 77-hour or 6-hour rest requirements, to point at the operational cause.
Designed for ships and seafarers
Easy planners and an intuitive interface let crew record hours quickly and correctly, without training courses.

- Monthly trend of deviations for all vessels and ranks
- Deviation risk analysis by type of STCW and MLC breach

Learn more about Work-Ship
What is Work-Ship?
Work-Ship is work and rest hours management software from Synergetic Shipping Technologies, approved by ClassNK, IRClass and RightShip. It gives crews easy planners and record-keeping, alerts ship and shore to non-compliances in real time, and provides fleet trending and company-specific reports ashore.
Does Work-Ship handle clock changes and the International Date Line?
Yes. Work-Ship applies International Date Line crossings and clocks retarded or advanced correctly, and it also supports OPA-90 work-hour application and flexible overtime rules.
How does Work-Ship reduce non-conformities?
Alerts onboard and ashore flag heightened non-compliances as they build, and non-conformities must be acknowledged by both ship and shore in real time. This lets work be replanned before a breach, which reduces non-conformities without manipulation of data.
Can Work-Ship be used on its own?
Yes. Any Marine X7 module, including Work-Ship, can run standalone. It can also be used alongside other Marine X7 modules such as Crew X7 and HSEQ X7.
