Hold cleaning is now an environmental, commercial and vetting issue at once
Clean holds were once a matter of crew effort before the next cargo. Today how holds are cleaned, what is discharged and what it cost are all checked by regulators, vetting schemes, charterers and owners.
Cargo residues and hold wash water are regulated as garbage, with discharge allowed only under set conditions that depend on the cargo, the sea area and the distance from land, and entries required in the Garbage Record Book.
Whether a cargo is classed as harmful to the marine environment changes how its residues and wash water may be handled, so the cleaning plan has to start from the cargo.
Dry bulk inspections look at cargo hold condition and at garbage and environmental management on board.
Port State inspections check Annex V records, and failed hold inspections before loading lead to delays, extra cleaning and disputes over off-hire.
DryBMS expects dry bulk operators to manage cargo operations and environmental performance as measured processes, and TMSA 3 sets the same expectation for tanker operators.
What this is costing ship managers today
Every failed hold inspection costs time, money and the charterer's confidence, and most of the cost is hidden until the voyage is closed.
Every ship cleans differently
Without a standard procedure, results depend on who is on board, and the same cargo change is handled differently across the fleet.
Failed hold inspections
When holds fail survey, the vessel waits, crews re-clean, shore gangs may be hired and the cost of idle time mounts.
Supplies over-ordered or missing
Chemicals, equipment and consumables are ordered vessel by vessel with little visibility, so some ships hold too much and others run short.
Costs nobody can see in full
Cleaning chemicals, shore gangs, crew bonuses, idle time and bunkers sit in different places, so the true cost of a cleaning is rarely known.
Slow ship-shore communication
Progress updates and photographs travel by email, so the shore team advising the ship is always behind events.
Email, photographs and experience — or a planned, measured cleaning for every hold
Hold cleaning should follow a fleet standard, be reported hold by hold as it happens, and be costed in full.
What sets Clean X7 apart for your fleet
Clean X7 is the world's first hold cleaning tracking and management system, built for hold cleaning operations at scale and simple enough for ships to use on every cargo change.
Your matrix, your standard
Build your own hold cleaning matrix and standardise procedures across the fleet, so every ship cleans the company way.
Ship and shore together
Interactive communication between the ship and the hold cleaning team ashore, with quick reports and pictures for each hold.
Every cost in one place
Budget, expenses, inventories, supply orders, vendors and cost comparisons are tracked together, with intelligent oversupply tracking.
Offline for ships
An offline system for ships and a web-based system for shore, so reporting does not depend on connectivity.

Cleaner holds, fewer delays, controlled cost
The return from Clean X7 comes from passing hold inspections the first time, from avoiding over-supply and from seeing the full cost of every cleaning.
Fewer failed inspections
A standard matrix, operations performed as planned and shore support in real time reduce the re-cleans, waiting time and shore gangs that follow a failed hold survey.
Less wasted supply
Inventory tracking and intelligent oversupply alerts stop chemicals, equipment and consumables being ordered beyond what each ship needs.
The full cost, visible
Cleaning costs, idle time, bunkers, shore gangs and crew bonuses are tracked against budget, so commercial and technical teams can see what each cleaning really costs.
Patterns across cleanings, and a tool built for the deck
Every cleaning adds to a fleet history of methods, results, supplies and costs, so the next one can be planned better.
Performance tracking
Pass and fail results by period show which ships, cargoes and methods are performing and which need attention.
Vendor and cost analysis
Supplier performance and cost comparisons show which vendors and products deliver results at the right price.
Oversupply detection
Inventory and supply data are analysed to flag ships holding more cleaning material than they need.
Designed for ships and seafarers
Super-easy planning and quick photo reporting for each hold, with an offline system on board so crews can report as they work.
Hold cleaning costs, inventory and performance at a glance
The Clean X7 dashboard shows budget against actual for every cost head, inventory use, operational results and monthly spend.

- Budget versus actual for each cleaning cost head
- Inventory of cleaning equipment, chemicals and consumables against budget
- Pass, fail and owner-fail results by month
- Monthly analysis of cumulative cleaning cost against the annual budget

Learn more about Clean X7
What is Clean X7?
Clean X7 is a hold cleaning tracking and management system from Synergetic Shipping Technologies, described as the world's first of its kind. It lets companies build their own hold cleaning matrix, standardise procedures across the fleet, receive reports with pictures for each hold, and track inventories, supplies, vendors, budget and expenses.
Does Clean X7 work on board without internet?
Yes. Clean X7 is an offline system for ships and a web-based system for shore.
Can Clean X7 control cleaning supplies and costs?
Yes. It tracks inventories and supplies, budget and expenses, supports supply ordering, vendor management and cost comparisons, and includes an intelligent system to track oversupply.
Can Clean X7 be used on its own?
Yes. Any Marine X7 module can run standalone, so Clean X7 can be used on its own and connected to other Marine X7 modules later.
