Onboard Vessel Audits

Sailing Audits for Navigation, Mooring & Cargo: A Master Mariner Sails With Your Ship

Our Master Mariner auditor joins the vessel and sails with her, from unmooring and outbound pilotage through coastal and open-sea passage to inbound pilotage and berthing. Navigation, mooring, cargo and internal ISM/ISPS practices are audited as they happen, every observation is risk-categorised against your procedures, SIRE 2.0, TMSA 3 and RightShip, and the crew are trained on board while the auditor is still there.

What has changed

Vetting wants to see how the ship is really run

Certificates and completed checklists no longer settle the question. Oil majors, charterers and inspectors want evidence that bridge, mooring and cargo teams follow the procedures when the pressure is on, and that the office checks this for itself.

SIRE 2.0

Inspectors observe tasks and question the crew, comparing what people do and say with what the procedures require.

TMSA 3

Operators are expected to verify shipboard practice through regular audits by competent people and to act on what those audits find.

RightShip

Operational practice and incidents shape the safety picture that charterers see when they screen a vessel.

ISM & ISPS

Internal audits must show, with objective evidence, that the safety and security systems work on board, not just that documents exist.

Sailing vs. alongside

An audit done alongside sees records. An auditor who sails sees pilotage, watchkeeping, mooring and cargo work as they really happen.

The risk of waiting

What a desk-based audit can miss

Most navigation, mooring and cargo incidents begin with habits that never show up in paperwork.

  • Practice never observed

A port audit checks logs and checklists but never sees the Master-pilot exchange, the bridge in traffic or the mooring party at work.

  • Mooring risk hidden in routine

Snap-back zones, line handling and winch practice look fine on paper until a line parts.

  • Repeat observations in vetting

The same navigation and cargo gaps reappear across inspections because nobody has corrected them on board.

  • Findings with no fleet picture

Without consolidation, the office cannot see which issues repeat across vessels or which ships need attention first.

What you get

Everything you get from a Synergetic sailing audit

One attendance gives you evidence, crew training and fleet insight, not just a report.

01

Comprehensive audit report

A detailed report aligned with your company procedures, SIRE 2.0, TMSA 3, RightShip and industry best practice, covering every phase of the voyage the auditor sailed.

02

Navigation, mooring and cargo audits

Bridge practice, mooring operations and cargo operations audited in one attendance, with internal ISM/ISPS audits and SIRE 2.0 training available in the same visit.

03

Risk-categorised observations

Each observation is risk-categorised, so management gets a clear picture of current practice and knows what to fix first.

04

Best practices and training needs

Good practice is acknowledged as well as gaps, and crew training needs are identified for each vessel.

05

Worldwide fleet benchmarking

Your vessels compared with each other and with benchmarking data from vessels we have audited, for continuous improvement.

06

Six-monthly fleet analysis

A summary of high-risk non-conformities and observations, the most repeated observations across your fleet, and industry benchmarking data points.

07

Pre-vetting inspections (SIRE 2.0, RightShip, AMSA)

A Master Mariner inspects the vessel the way a SIRE 2.0, RightShip or AMSA inspector would, questions the crew, closes gaps on board where possible and reports what still needs fixing before the real inspection.

08

Confidential report

Alongside the final audit report, a confidential report for the office is issued after the auditor disembarks.

How it works

From planning to final report, the voyage is covered end to end

We handle the logistics and prepare the auditor for your system, so your superintendents do not have to.

  1. 1

    Pre-boarding

We arrange boarding with your office, the vessel and the agent, share the preparatory instructions, and align the audit and the auditor with your procedures, requirements and SMS.

  2. 2

    Boarding and departure

An opening meeting agrees the audit schedule and first impressions are noted. The auditor then observes unmooring, outbound pilotage and coastal navigation for situational awareness and compliance.

  3. 3

    At Sea

An audit review meeting is held during the open-sea passage, the audit continues, and training and drills are carried out with the crew.

  4. 4

    Arrival

Command and control, situational awareness and compliance are verified through pre-arrival, anchoring, inbound pilotage and berthing.

  5. 5

    Closing and report

A closing meeting is held before the auditor leaves. After disembarkation we submit the final report and a confidential report.

Navigation, mooring, cargo and internal ISM/ISPS audits, pre-vetting inspections and SIRE 2.0 training can be combined in one sailing attendance. For navigation audits without boarding, see our remote VDR analysis service.

Plan a Sailing Audit
What is a sailing audit?

A sailing audit is an onboard audit in which an auditor joins a vessel and sails with her, observing real operations rather than only checking records alongside. Synergetic Shipping Technologies sends a Master Mariner auditor to audit navigation, mooring, cargo and internal ISM/ISPS practice from unmooring and pilotage through the sea passage to berthing, then delivers a risk-categorised report aligned with company procedures, SIRE 2.0, TMSA 3 and RightShip.

What does a sailing navigation audit cover?

A sailing navigation audit follows each phase of the voyage: pre-departure, unberthing and outbound pilotage, coastal navigation, open-sea navigation, pre-arrival or anchoring, and inbound pilotage and berthing. At each stage the auditor checks situational awareness, command and control, and compliance with company procedures, SIRE 2.0, TMSA 3, RightShip and industry best practice, and carries out training and drills with the crew during the passage.

Can navigation, mooring and cargo audits be done in one visit?

Yes. Synergetic Shipping Technologies combines navigation, mooring and cargo audits in a single sailing attendance, and internal ISM/ISPS audits and SIRE 2.0 training can be added to the same visit. Because the auditor sails through departure, passage and arrival, mooring and cargo operations are seen as they happen, alongside bridge practice, which saves a separate attendance for each audit type.

Who carries out Synergetic's sailing audits?

Synergetic's sailing audits are carried out by expert Master Mariners, each with experience auditing 50+ vessels and a long association with the company. Before boarding, the auditor is briefed and trained on the client's own procedures, requirements and SMS, so observations are judged against how the company expects its ships to operate as well as against SIRE 2.0, TMSA 3 and RightShip.

What do we receive after a sailing audit?

After the auditor disembarks you receive a comprehensive final audit report and a separate confidential report. Observations are risk-categorised, good practices are acknowledged and crew training needs are identified. Clients also receive worldwide fleet benchmarking against vessels Synergetic has audited, with internal fleet comparisons, and a six-monthly fleet analysis of high-risk and most repeated observations.

Where are your auditors available?

Synergetic Shipping Technologies has auditors locally available in Europe, the US, India and the Gulf, Asia, Australia, and Central & South America. Our team plans the audit calendar, coordinates boarding with the company, the vessel and the agent, follows up with agencies and gives the auditor shore-based assistance for embarkation and disembarkation, so the office does not have to manage the logistics.

How is a sailing audit different from a remote VDR audit?

In a sailing audit a Master Mariner is physically on board, observing navigation, mooring and cargo work, interviewing the crew and running training and drills during the voyage. A remote VDR audit reconstructs bridge practice from the vessel's Voyage Data Recorder data without boarding. Synergetic Shipping Technologies offers both, and many fleets use them together to verify bridge practice.

How does a sailing audit support SIRE 2.0 and TMSA 3?

SIRE 2.0 inspectors observe tasks and question the crew, and TMSA 3 expects operators to verify shipboard practice through regular audits and act on the results. A sailing audit gives the office first-hand evidence of how bridge, mooring and cargo teams actually work, risk-categorised findings to act on, and crew training on board, which prepares the vessel for the questions vetting inspectors ask.

Do you carry out pre-vetting inspections?

Yes. Pre-vetting inspections are part of Synergetic's sailing audit service. A Master Mariner inspects the vessel against the SIRE 2.0, RightShip or AMSA requirements before the real inspection, questions the crew the way an inspector would, closes gaps on board where possible and reports what still needs action. Our team has completed 550+ onboard sailing audits and pre-vetting inspections.
